buku Falsafah Sains pendekatan kualitatif
oleh Prof Mat Rofa.
muka surat 137-141.

Sufastah : Adakah tuan percaya Tuhan wujud?
Ahli falsafah : Memang semua orang percaya demikian.
Sufastah : Saya tidak percaya Tuhan wujud.
Ahli falsafah : Jika demikian, siapakah yang yang mencipta manusia?
Sufastah : Sudah pasti ibu bapanya!

Kiyai : Dari manakah teori evolusi bermula?
Pelajar :Jutaan tahun tentunya.
Pelajar : Mungkin ayam betina.
Kiyai : Kenapa ayam betina?
Pelajar : Supaya ayam lain bleh dibiakkan.
Kiyai : Bolehkah ayam betina bertelur tanpa ayam jantan?
Pelajar : Tentu tidak.
Kiyai : Bilakah pula ayam jantan terjadi, bermula daripada ameba?
Pelajar : Jutaan tahun pula.
Kiyai : Katakan ayam betina terjadi dahulu.Tentu ayam betina itu mati dahulu
sebelum ayam jantan tercipta. Bolehkah seekor ayam hidup jutaan tahun?
jutaan kemungkinan pula perlu berlaku, malah jutaan kebetulan perlu
Berlaku secara tertib dan tersusun rapi.
Pelajar : Kenapa pula?
dijustifikasikan dengan alas an kebetulan? Peristiwa yang berlaku secara
tersusun semestinya ada penyusunnya.Kebetulan tidak boleh berlaku
secara teratur.Orang inggeris menagatakan chance cannot create order.
Pelajar : Bapa boleh bertutur bahasa inggeris ya?

******************************************************************

Scientific Tafseer of Surah Al-Falaq

Copied from:
A Concise Study of Sura Al-Falaq
Atomic Scientist, Engineer
Sultan Bashir-ud-Din Mahmood

INTRODUCTION

Sura Al-Falaq is the last but one sura of the Holy Quran, and thus contains the parting message of the Dervine Revelation. Quran begins with sura Al-Fatiha, where the believers beseech for Allah’s guidance on the straight path leading to Jannat. All that followed, is the answer to man’s this prayer. By acting upon it, Insha Allah, we shall find the salvation. But Shataan is the greatest hindrance in our way. The last two suras of the Quran i.e. sura Al-Falaq and Sura An-Nas warn man of the mischief of shatanic forces and advise to seek refuge of Allah from the psychic attacks of Shataan and his allies.

Taking refuge of some one depends upon three factors i.e. that you are in danger, that you cannot protect yourself; and that there is a powerful protector willing to give you refuge. Then you will enter into his protection, confident enough that you are in safe hands. Enemy also knows then that he / she dare not harm you in this respect. If this is o who is greater Protector the Allah? We must always seek His protection from, any and all types of mischiefs, may it be the evil of minds or magic or any other psychic disorder. Be sure Allah listens and He responds.

Seeking refuge of Allah is not denying use of means. Infact careful planning, hard work and diligent use of all the available resources is obligatory over a Muslim, but dependence upon them is a gross sin. In this respect we should always keep in mind the following famous Hadith of our Rasool

“When an Arab Bedouin came to the Messenger of Allah ( صلىالله عليه وآله وسلم ) he asked “What have you done with your camel? The Beduin replied, I have left it outside the mosque in the care of Allah. The Messenger of Allah ( صلىالله عليه وآله وسلم ) said, “Go back, first tie the leg of your camel with the trunk of a strong tree and then put your Trust in Allah.

Explanation of Verses

Rabb-ul-Falaq

The openings Aya of the Sura Al-Falq ( ) is highly meaningful. It orders every believer to proclaim that he / she must seek the protection of “Rabb-ul-Falq” from all types of evil that He has created. There can be none more appropriate to protect us than the one who is not only our Creator but also the Creator of the things which may cause harm to us.

The word Falq () means “shearing one thing into two”. The word Rabb ( قلف بر) means the Designer, Creator, Nourisher and Sustainer of things from the beginning to the end. Thus Rabb-ul-Falaq means; Allah who brought about the existence by shearing the nothingness into positive and negative forces, as zero is the sum totals of all the pluses and minuses. i.e., (+100) + (-100)=0 or (+x) + (-x) =0. This happens according to the law of pairs about which Quran says, “He has created everything into pairs, those you know and those you know not. (Sura Yasin Aya 36) One thing is split into two opposite entities. Thus Falq is transient state between cause and effect. As shown in the figure, cause “A” at the moment of Falq gives birth to the pair effects i.e., B + C. If B is good C will be bad.

In science this process may be understand with reference to the 2nd law of thermodynamics, which states that creation of order at one place is simultaneously associated with the appearance of an equal or more of disorder at another place unless compensated by some external agent. For example, cooing effect inside a refrigerator is balanced by the heating effect in the condenser coils outsides. One person’s wealth is associated with another person’s poverty, pesticides kill pests which in the long range enter into food chain of humans as a poison for them too.

Thus the opening statement of the Sura Al-Falq points out a great reality of nature that good and evil go side by side; Therefore a momin must never be careless of the evil around him. He Keeps seeking the protection of Allah and is ever mindful of the evil around him. After this general reminder of the prevailing evils in the world, the following ayats ask us to seek refuse of Allah from certain specific dangers.

EVIL OF DARKNESS

Darkness brings evil, may it be spiritual or physical. In the actual sense also as the sun sets in, darkness begins to overcast the things. With it all types of wildlife start coming out of their hidings. Criminals, thief and dacoits become active. Nights clubs with their evil of gambling, prostitution and wine also wake up:
Not only crimes, but even health problems may worsen at night. Emergencies such as heart attacks, brain hammer ages, sugar disorders and cancer etc are relatively more dangerous at night than the day. In war times also, night attacks are more frequent. Even destructive effects of external calamities such as earthquakes, floods, tsunamis, etc prove more dangerous at night than day, because people are caught suddenly in their sleep.

Muslims are thus advised in the Sura Al-falq to take refuge of Allah from all types of evil effect of darkness.

Rasool-Allah ( صلىالله عليه وآله وسلم ) advised his followers to carefully lock the doors, put off all types of fire, cover the water and food. Recite the last two suras of the Quran before going to bed. These are general safety measures for every muslim house. If these practical measures, are taken in obedience to the Messenger of Allah ( صلىالله عليه وآله وسلم ) automatically they become acts of piety and worship of Allah also.

MISCHIEF OF MAGIC AND WITCHCRAFTS

The Aya 4 of the sura Al-Falaq advises the believer to particularly seek refuge in Allah from the evil of black magic and witch crafts. ( ) Evil of the witch crafts who blow on knots, refers to a particular type of witch practice in which they blow or spit for certain number of times and go on making knots on thread while reciting magical utterances. Blowing on knots also mean evil planning and mischief’s of the magicians. Thus in its overall sense message is quite general and includes all type of psychic practices intended to harm the victims, through evil spirits and their evil thoughts.

Unfortunately exploitation by magical cults and which crafts is quite popular even in this modem age. Jews and Hindus are particularly notorious for carrying these evil practices. We must remember that all types of magic and witchcrafts practices are forbidden in Islam. But they are real threat and no superstition, thus we should be careful to gerard ourselves from such dangers. While the Messenger of Allah was busy in delivering His Message to the world, Jews and heathens tried many times to harm him through such evil practices but without success, as he was especially protected from evil spirits and Jinns by Allah. Some of the Hadith do mention of a magic attack by one Jew Labid Bin Aasim which is said to have caused some forgetfulness in the Rasool-ul-Allah ( ) However this tradition contradicts Quran and therefore is doubtful in its contents.

THE MISCHIEF OF JEALOUSY

The last verse of the sura Al Falaq, ( ) invites our attention to seek protection of Allah from the evil of jealousy. This is the most common type of evil in the world which generally sprouts from one’s friends, relatives, neighbors, colleagues, all those who compete with you in life. They cause you harm intentionally or unintentionally by their jealous thoughts. One who is jealous to you, will wish you to be deprived of the blessings of Allah and have them himself. This feeling breeds an air of hatred, and enmity for you in the environment. Consequently the jealousies begins to radiate negative bio energy against you. Generally its source is their eyes. That is why jealous eyes put you off. Jealousy working through tongue can deceive you; and through hand can harm you in a hidden way.

You will find it a wide spread disease in your near and dear ones. Messenger of Allah advised us to be kind, humble and keep low profile to escape their jealousy. More over, with the daily recitation of Sura al-Falaq we should seek Allah’s protection to escape harm from the evil of the jealous people.

FURTHER NOTES ON WITCH CRAFTS

Witch crafts, sorcery, magic are the art of using evil spirits to harm the subjects. Generally womenfolk being physically weaker, rely more upon such psychic weapons to attack their victims.

As regards the nature of which craft, it is not always superstition. As our understanding is developing new secrets are coming to light. For example in the early 20th century, universe was considered like a machine made by the different combination of atoms glued together. Thus scientific people generally believed that there was no rational for spiritual concepts of the world. But deeper research in the atomic world is now rapidly changing this view. Real world is largely vacuum. For example, if nucleus is the size of a dried pea, the nearest electron on this relative scale will be about 200 meter away. Further deep, atom is basically held together by four fundamental forces which in turn may be just four states of a Singular Force. Thus over the years our perceptions of materials world have changed a lot. It seems now more realistic to think of universe as a Thought Machine of the Creator, in which His Amr (Design) operates. It is a spiritual world constituting of some fundamental forces of nature, and all the rest is merely the manifestation of these forces. Laws of physics are applicable to only the inorganic things and break in the life systems. They seem to be governed not by the atomic forces but the mind force of the universe set in matter. Just as all the atoms in the universe are connected to each other through Gravity, the spirits effect each other through Mind Forces. Good wishes cast good effects and the evils thoughts have evil impact on the target people. Just as in intelligence and physique different people have different capabilities, same is the case of psychic powers. No one is devoid of them. But some are more gifted than others. However, people can enhance these powers to effect others positively or negatively by “Thought exercises”. In this respect book “Psychic Warrior” by major Moor house, Published USA is an interesting reading.

Evolution vs Creation Jokes

LADIES & GENTLEMAN !!!!
IT'S THE BATTLE OF THE MILLENIUM !!!!
CREATION VS. EVOLUTION!!!

This is going to be a caged, no holds barred match, to the death!!!!

In one corner we have EVOLUTION, who brings with it an assortment of weapons, including : records, fossils, actual proof, and even a bit of faith and belief.

In the other corner we have CREATION, who brings---wait a minute, CREATION is pulling something from out of a sack, it's a....it's a....It's a book?!? CREATION has brought a book to use in battle. And yes a bit of faith & belief.

It's unbelievable the way they are going at each other folks! It's a battle royal. Who will win this grudge match? Who will suffer from their loss? We may never know. Let's watch & see, and pray ours is the victorious one, which ever that may be.

Q :Why did the chicken cross the road?
Evolutionist: Pure chance.
Evolutionist: Only the fittest chickens survive crossing the road.
Creationist: God created the chicken on the other side of the road. There is no proof it ever was on this side.

This essay was originally posted on July 24th 2000 in response to a Biblical creationist who misunderstood evolutionary theory so badly that he used the following example in an attempt to refute it:
"If you put automobile parts in a box and shake it up for a trillion years, you will not get an automobile".

I have since heard other creationists define evolution as a collection of single cells that suddenly, intentionally, and purposefully amassed themselves directly into a human being while other separate cell groups independently evolved into reptiles, birds, fish, etc. Another creationist also described a single individual fish suddenly growing legs and walking within one lifetime. Another demanded that if evolution were true, why didn't horses sprout wings to escape predators?

Ovulation versus cretinism

Two different theories exist concerning the origin of children: the theory of sexual reproduction, and the theory of the stork. Many people believe in the theory of sexual reproduction because they have been taught this theory at school.

In reality, however, many of the world's leading scientists are in favour of the theory of the stork. If the theory of sexual reproduction is taught in schools, it must only be taught as a theory and not as the truth. Alternative theories, such as the theory of the stork, must also be taught.

Evidence supporting the theory of the stork includes the following:

1. It is a scientifically established fact that the stork does exist. This can be confirmed by every ornithologist.

2. The alleged human foetal development contains several features that the theory of sexual reproduction is unable to explain.

3. The theory of sexual reproduction implies that a child is approximately nine months old at birth. This is an absurd claim. Everyone knows that a
newborn child is newborn.

4. According to the theory of sexual reproduction, children are a result of sexual intercourse. There are, however, several well documented cases where sexual intercourse has not led to the birth of a child.

5. Statistical studies in the Netherlands have indicated a positive correlation between the birth rate and the number of storks. Both are decreasing.

6. The theory of the stork can be investigated by rigorous scientific methods. The only assumption involved is that children are delivered by the stork.

Scientific Tafsir of Surah Al-Ikhlas

Credit to:
Atomic Scientist, Engineer
Sultan Bashir-ud-Din Mahmood
(http://darulhikmat.com/)

INTRODUCTION

Sura Al-Ikhlas forcefully and eloquently proclaims “The absolute Singularity of Allah”, the very Primordial characteristics of the Creator of the Universes. This is the fundamental teaching of Islam and has been the focal point of teachings of all the earlier Prophets of Allah. The absolute reality of everything rests upon the principle of the Unity of the Creator. In view of its importance, the Messenger of Allah (Sallallaho Alaihay Wa-Aalayhe Wasallam) said,“By Him, in whose hand is my soul, Sura Al-Ikhlas is equal to one third of the Quran”. He who recites this sura with love and faith in the unity of Allah, the Messenger of Allah (Sallallaho Alaihay Wa-Aalayhe Wasallam) said, “Tell him Allah loves him [1].
Beliefs in duality, trinity or multiplicity of gods and making His images or idols or assigning God-likes reverence to any one besides Him are the priestly innovations and have no truth at all. The pinnacle point of the teachings of Moses and Jesus was also pure and simple monotheism. They all preached the absolute Oneness of the Creator of Universe, denying any types of partners to Him. Thus said Jesus,
“Cursed is every one who shall insert into my saying that I am the Son of God”.[2] Further he said,
“Ye may perceive your sin: for I am a visible man and a morsel of clay that walked upon the earth, mortal as are other men. And I have a beginning and shall have an end, and (am) such that cannot create a fly ever again”.[3]It is heartening to note that there are many Christians now who no longer take the concept of trinity seriously and believe in One God only. Insistence on the rigid secularism in the West is also because rationality does not justify the concept of a material son of a pure Spiritual Being. Thus instead of believing in this philosophy they find it easier to reject religion altogether.

EXPLANATION GRAND SINGULARITY

Sura begins with the forceful call of “QUL”. This is the order from Creator of the universes to pronounce and proclaim with full faith before whole of the world, with all available means, without any doubt:
قل هو الله احد
“There is only One and the Only One God. He is Allah.”
This is the greatest truth of all. Basis of all scientific laws, the Alfa and Omega of every creation. Whole universe proclaims it and everything in it is witness to the Creator’s absolute Singularity. Concept of the polytheism is the product of the weakness of feeble men, that in fear or in love, they made gods for them out of every thing. That challenged their imagination. When they see that even the most autocratic monarchs depend for their power on family ties and confederates, they fall in doubt about the unity of the Lord of the universe also. Thus under their psychics misgivings, they assign partners and family to the Creator of the Universe also. Whereas the absoluteness of scientific laws in the universe call upon every true seeker of truth that their cannot be but the only one Creator. You may call Him Grand Singularity, or give Him any other name, He is the same God who over rides the Time-Space Continuum. He is Allah!

ABSOLUTE CAUSE VERSUS CHAIN OF CAUSES AND EFFECTS

To understand this great truth let us reflect into the working of the chain of Cause and Effect. Every cause creates some effects which become cause for the subsequence events. So there is a chain of causes and effects; Events have thus continued multiplying since the beginning. If one Cause on the average gives birth to two effects then chain reaction of events may look as seen in the figure given herein.[4]

Today, Universe as seen by the science is composed of trillium of trillions of galaxies with each galaxy having incomprehensible number of stars and planets. But down in the time, fifteen to twenty billion years ago all this was one unit mass of zero volume, believed to have begun with a Big Bang out of “Nothingness”. According to the scientists even Time and Space did not exist before Big Bang. Then who could be the first cause? Answer is only One – He is ALLAH The Absolute – Reality. He is the Primordial source Head of Time and Space, which are the two essential inputs for any happening. Thus He is every where, in bed out of everything. He knows everything, controls everything, creates everything. He is up and down, Past, Present and Future at the same instant. He is at every point of space – time continuum. He has introduced Himself in the Quran:
هوالاول والاخر والظاهروالباطن وهوعلى كل شي عليم
He is the First, He is the Last, He is the outermost, He is the Inner Most. He has the absolute knowledge of every thing.Since the First and the Last relate to Time domain; where outermost and liner most relate to the space domain, Space – Time continuum is the characteristics of His own persmality. Nothing can happen without His leave.[5]

As for the universe, where was it before the Big Bang? Who caused it to appear? Who regulate it? Who gave it design and shape? Who holds it? Why are there laws of science? Answer to all these question exist in the Infinity of the Creator. You know mathematics fail there in. For example, if you go on adding billion of infinities answer will still be infinity or you divide the infinity by any number answer will remain the same. The great scientist Einstein proved that scientific laws are the same in every nook and corner of Time - Space continuum. Thus universe is the primary witness of the Absolute Singularity of the Creator. It is there because it has only one creator everywhere.

PRIMAL FORCE

Modern developments in Mathematics and Physics and (life sciences) are also coming as witness to the Unity of the Creator in their own way. They see that multiplicity in the scientific laws is actually different ways of the working of a Singular Primal Force. Presently science has known that universe is held together by a combination of four fundamental forces of Nature. These are:-
1) Electromagnetism (on which depend the entire communication system, electrical gadgets and light emitted from the sun and stars); etc
2) Nuclear Strong forces
3) Nuclear weak forces (which give stability to the atom and therefore things exist).
4) Gravitational Force through which all the atoms in the universe are interconnected and which keeps balance between heavenly bodies.Going deeper scientists visualize that even these four forces may actually be the manifestation of a Single Absolute Force. Scientist Abdus-Salam and Weinbergh proved in their Noble Prize winning work that Strong Nuclear and Weak Nuclear Forces are actually two shades of the Single Nuclear Force. Similar to this reasoning all scientific laws are also thought to converge into a Grand singularity i.e. Grand Theory of every Thing. Thus science over its long history is seen converging from multiplicity to singularity and emerging as the principle witness of the absolute Oneness of the Creator, the Alpha and Omega the Primal Cause, The Time – Space Continuum, The Ever Living …ALLAH.

INFINITY AND THE UNDERSTANDING THE WORKING OF ALLAH

We have already referred to the fact that in Mathematics there is a quantity called infinity. This is the limit of Mathematics, logic and science. It is indivisible, unimaginable, limitless value where all the laws of science break. For example, you add a billion million infinities, but the total will remain the same one infinity, or you multiply millions of infinities answer will be again one infinity. It is not subject to physical laws either. For example, circle of an infinite radius can be assigned infinite centers in it. It has no boundary but infinite boundaries exist in it. Concept of Allah in Islam is also of an Infinite being, like whom there is none.

He surrounds the universe as a whole and at the same time, every single atomic particle also. ( للهاو ٌيش لكب طيحم ) If mathematics cannot comprehend infinity, how can any one comprehend the Infiniteness of the Absolute Reality of the Creator of everything? If you cannot divide infinity into two or three, how can you believe in the duality or Trinity in the Infinity of Allah? Where is the room for Father, Mother and Son in His Oneness? He is the First before whom there is no first, He is the Last after whom there is no last, He is the Outermost, out of which exists nothing, He is the Inner Most beyond which nothing exists, ( هولاول والاخر والظاهرواللباطن ) and He is fully aware of everything.

THE ABSOLUTE REALITY AND ABSOLUTE AUTHORITY

The next verse of Sura Ikhlas smashes all false motions about Allah Subhanahu by declaring,
الله الصمدThe word Samad ( صمد ) means the one on who is totally Self Sufficient, who is indeperdent of all, all are dependent on Him; and He depends on no one for His existence, The Indivisible, The Everlasting refuge, The actual Arabic word “Assamad” has the root word ‘Sammad’ meaning an unbreakable insurmountable rock behind which people take refuge in war. Addition of the word Al gives it the meaning of absoluteness. Thus the word Assamad represent the special Name of Allah, meaning the one who is Absolute, Undefeatable. Imperishable, Indivisible, Strongest, The Everlasting Refuge for every one. He must stand alone within and outside His creations with the Absolute, Imperishable, Indivisible Authority He is Assamad (الصمد).

SOLE AUTHORITY – NEITHER BEGOTTEN, NOR BEGETS
Infiniteness and Absoluteness of Allah automatically means that He shares His authority with none, neither He depends for it on any one. This is calarified by the verse 3 of the sura Akhlas, which says;
He begets not and, nor is He begotten. He has no child nor is He child of any one. This makes it clear that there is no linage of gods. In fact there is no place for any thing like this in the Infinity of His Singularity. To assign partners or linage to Infinity is simply, absurd and an abhorable idea for science and mathematics; and unforgivable sin in religion, the greatest lie in ethics, and total denial of wisdom and rationality. Thus even metaphorically words like “Father, Son and Holy Ghost” are wrong to utter in respect of Allah. The crux of Theory of Relativity and the greatest discovery of Einstein was that laws of science are universally true which speak out that there must be the same Creator everywhere? If He had father or son or other relatives or partners, it implies that universe would have been changing hands resulting into, disorder and chaos. But farts speak contrary to that.

INCOMPREHENSIBLE

The last Aya of this great Sura talks about the very Nature of our Creator. It says,
And there is absolutely none like unto Him.He is unique in all respects. As there is nothing like unto Him in the Universe, we have no reference to describe Him. Universe is fundamentally made of energy, matter and vacuum. He is composed of neither of them. The universe to which we belong is four dimensional i.e., Length, Width, Height and Time. If there is any more dimensions we cannot describe them in terms of these four. Since knowledge of human beings is only relative to the known things, therefore, nature of Allah cannot be described in terms of any known things, available words, symbols or expressions. Thus He will always remain beyond the comprehension of human beings. We have no words to describe Him, no ears to hear Him, no eyes to see Him, and no brains to understand Him. The only means with which we may feel Him is our Qulab, (Mind Force), Thus painting His pictures, or making His idols is unforgivable insult against His Holliness. We can feel the presence of the Creator through His creations only but cannot comprehend Him by our wisdom. It is just like a fish floating in the middle of a vast ocean. Water surrounds it from its inside outside, but ocean will remain incomprehensible to it always. Similarly, we may imagine Allah surrounding us, every cell of us, from inside to outside but we have no brains to describe His Infinite Being. “A subset cannot comprehend the superset, say mathematics”.

It is narrated by Abu Hurairah (Razi Allah Anho) Allah’s Messenger (Sallallaho Alaihay Wa-Aalayhe Wasallam) told;
“Allah says,“The son of Adam tells a lie against Me, he has not the right to do so; and he abuses Me, and he has not the right to do so. He is telling a lie against Me in his saying that I will not recreate him as I created him for the first time; and his absusing Me in his saying that Allah has begotten a son (or children), while I am As-Samad. Who begets not, nor was He begotten, and there is none like or co-equal or comparable unto Me”.[6]

100 Fakta Kelantan - 17 Tahun

Sempena jam-jam terakhir berlangsungnya Pilihanraya Umum Malaysia Kali Ke-12, ingin saya dedikasikan sebuah sajak karangan Dinsman kepada pembaca blog khususnya rakyat Kelantan.

Tapi sekiranya esok kita menyaksikan kerajaan PAS Kelantan berjaya ditumbangkan, terus-terang saya katakan CELAKALAH anda rakyat Kelantan 18 tahun dinaungi pemerintahan warisan para anbiya tetapi tidak tahu mensyukuri!

Fiqh Maqasid from the view of Sheikh Salman al-'Audah

The Objectives of Islamic Law Sheikh Salman al-Oadah
April 5, 2007
Allah says: “Allah commands justice, the doing of good, and liberality to kith and kin, and He forbids all shameful deeds, and injustice and rebellion: He instructs you, that you may receive admonition.” [Sûrah al-Nahl: 90]

This verse presents to us in broad terms the objectives of Islamic Law. It calls for justice in legislation, for precision, quality and ethical conduct in interpersonal conduct and industry, and for generosity in the flow of wealth. This verse expresses the noblest values for life and the greatest concern for the general welfare.

The objectives of Islamic Law are the purposes and goals that it aspires to achieve through its laws, especially with respect to human welfare. Among Allah’s many names are al-Hakîm (the Wise) and al-Khabîr (the Well-Acquainted). Whatever he does in the heavens or on Earth is always founded in great wisdom and for a good purpose.

With respect to this topic – the objectives of Islamic Law – we find that certain people have gone to one of two extremes.

At one extreme, there are people who use this idea as the basis for overturning the laws of Islam, even the essential religious obligations that constitute the pillars of Islam. They argue that the purpose of our worship is to develop the soul, and some people might attain a level of spiritual excellence whereby they do not need to offer prayers or fast or perform the pilgrimage. Such people, in fact, are renouncing Islamic Law altogether and severing it from its basis in revelation. Islam, in its essence, is to submit ourselves to Allah in obedience. “Whoever submits his whole self to Allah, and is a doer of good, has grasped indeed the most trustworthy hand-hold: and with Allah rests the end of all affairs.” [Sûrah Luqmân: 22]

Justice – for instance – is not a concept of purely human effort, but rather it is implicit in the teachings of Islam. A Muslim cannot hope to achieve perfect justice divorced from the laws and principles of Islam.

At the other extreme are those people who regard the objectives of Islamic Law to be the various rulings themselves, denuded of context, divorced from human understanding, and closed to scrutiny. By approaching Islamic Law in this way, they let their narrow, personal understanding of a hadîth or a Companion’s statement or a passage in a legal text besiege the general principles of Islamic Law and undermine its goals.

True, we must not turn away from the rich legacy of Islamic scholarship that has preceded us in the various fields of jurisprudence, law, commentary, and history. However, we must use that legacy to guide us in engaging with the sacred texts: the Qur’ân which “no falsehood approaches from before or behind, a revelation from the Wuse and Praise-worthy” and the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) who “does not speak of his own desire.”

The way to understand the Qur;ân and Sunnah is through its clear, decisive statements and broad injunctions that safeguard and secure human welfare in this world and the Hereafter.

We can see this where Allah says: “He it is Who has revealed the Book to you; some of its verses are decisive, they are the basis of the Book, and others are allegorical; then as for those in whose hearts there is perversity they follow the part of it which is allegorical, seeking to mislead and seeking to give it (their own) interpretation, but none knows its interpretation except Allah, and those who are firmly rooted in knowledge say: We believe in it, it is all from our Lord; and none will take heed except those who have understanding.” [Sûrah Âl `Imrân: 7]

The objectives of Islamic Law are to be found in the reasons behind particular legal rulings, reasons that appear time and time again. These are the considerations of welfare that are enshrined in Islamic Law and that surface as a consistent pattern when the rulings are studied in conjunction with one another and not in isolation. Scholars who specialize in the study of the purposes of Islamic Law, like al-Shâtibî, insist that it takes a broad survey of Islamic Law to discover these purposes.

It is through understanding these general purposes that the scope of Islamic Law is broadened, so that the needs and aspirations of the people can be fulfilled in accordance with Islam and within a legal framework that upholds the sanctity of the sacred texts. It is through these purposes that humanity can carry out its sacred duty of developing the world.

Allah says: “Allah hath promised such of you as believe and do good work that He will surely make them attain succession in the Earth even as He caused those who were before them to succeed (others); and that He will surely establish for them their religion which He hath approved for them, and will give them in exchange safety after their fear.” [Sûrah al-Nûr: 55]

The exercise of juristic reasoning (ijtihâd) in our contemporary context needs people with the acumen for approaching the texts with insight and understanding as much as it needs them to have knowledge of the texts themselves. This acumen can only be developed through focusing on the purposes of the Law, the purposes of specific rulings, and the purposes of the people who carry out those laws. Otherwise, the exercise of juristic reasoning will be pedantic and superficial, and it will yield results that are contrary to the very objectives that Islam came to bring about.

We should consider how one of the Companions understood the verse telling us when to stop eating and start our day’s fasts: “…until the white thread becomes distinct from the black thread of dawn.” [Sûrah al-Baqarah: 187]

He took it to mean strings of thread and took a literal black thread and white thread and thought that he should begin fasting when the day became bright enough for him to distinguish between the two.

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said about this Companion: “His understanding is limited.” How many are the people today who are equally limited in their understanding of Islamic Law. They put people into great hardship over the minutest and most tertiary of issues, and, without realizing it, undermine the purposes of Islamic Law.

There can be no true exercise of juristic reasoning without taking the objectives of Islamic law into consideration. This is why al-Shâtibî considered knowledge of these purposes to be as essential a condition for juristic reasoning as knowledge of Arabic. This is because only through such knowledge can a jurist hope to recognize the necessities, needs, and niceties of life that the religion of Islam seeks to preserve. A person with limited understanding might look in isolation at a ruling regarding a certain need or nicety without bringing it into context of the broader necessities that Islamic Law seeks to uphold.

Scholars of Islam have investigated these necessities, and determined them to be five: life, faith, reason, honor, and wealth. Some contemporary scholars have suggested a sixth, proposing things like justice, liberty, and fraternity. I believe it is more precise to refer to this sixth necessity as something like “society” which embraces all aspects of social justice, liberty, equality, and human dignity.
We can clearly see how Islamic Law makes “society” a primary consideration, sometimes at the expense of other considerations. We can see this in congregational prayer, in the Friday prayer, and in Hajj.

We see how the Prophet (peace be upon him) took this as a matter of necessity when he refrained from rebuilding the Ka`bah on its original foundations.

It is essential for a jurist to take these principles into consideration when dealing with issues, especially those that are exceptional and that require extra diligence in determining what is best. When jurists fail to take these things into account, it causes the public to doubt the value of Islamic Law, but really what the public is seeing is a misrepresentation and misapplication of the Law.

The purposes of Islamic Law are not all equally evident. Some are clear to the general public, like basic ethical principles and the essential necessities of life. Others, however, require a trained jurists eye, because they are more subtle, and require deeper investigation to discern. This is where juristic reasoning really needs to be exercised. This is where the jurist qualified to engage in juristic reasoning – the mujtahid – comes into play, someone who can understand the sacred texts in conjunction with the broad purposes of Islamic Law and then apply this knowledge to the actual circumstances of the outside world in order to come up with an appropriate legal ruling.

Our present need is all the more acute due to the paucity of understanding that Muslims have regarding what Islam wants for Muslim society and for the people – the protection of their liberties, the effective management of their affairs, the cultivation of virtue among them, the prohibition of vice, the development of their resources, the advancement of their capabilities, and the inculcation of the value of being a productive member of society. Today’s Muslims are in need of all of these things, people who often know a lot of Islamic legal rulings but know very little about the purposes behind them.
